Masato received his Ph.D. degree in Information Science from Nagoya University in 2009. During his Ph.D., he worked at Google and Microsoft Research as an intern, and thereafter at Baidu and Rakuten Institute of Technology, focusing on NLP technologies related to Asian language processing and search engines. Most recently he was a Senior Machine Learning Engineer at Duolingo, working on educational applications of NLP. He is the author of several books on NLP, including Real-World Natural Language Processing and Introduction to Japanese Natural Language Processing. He speaks English, Japanese, and Chinese fluently, and is currently learning Korean and Arabic.
