Listen to our story
, told by Alix Spiegel on NPR's Invisibilia."The strange story of an unlikely crew of people who band together to take on one of our largest problems using nothing but whale sounds, machine learning, and a willingness to think outside the box.
Even stranger, several of the world's most accomplished scientists seem to think they might have a good idea." — Alix Spiegel
- Read about us in Mary Lou Jepsen's piece for Wired Magazine's "Wired World 2020" issue.
"Earth Species Project aims to put the tools of our time—particularly artificial intelligence, and all that we have learned in using computers to understand our own languages—to the awesome task of hearing what animals have to say to each other, and to us.
There is something deeply comforting to think that AI language tools could do something so beautiful, going beyond completing our emails and putting ads in front of us, to knitting together all thinking species." — Mary Lou Jepsen
Who is ESP?
Earth Species Project was founded in 2017 and is an open-source collaborative project dedicated to decoding animal communication. Read more
about the humans behind the project.
What is ESP's mission?
We believe that an understanding of non-human languages will change our ecological impact on this planet.
What is your timeline?
This is the beginning of the journey. It’s too early to tell how long an endeavor like this into the unknown will take; and yet, machine learning is in a Cambrian explosion. 100 new machine learning papers being released every day and that number is accelerating.
Our technical roadmap
is available on our Github and we are committed to releasing all of our work in the open and towards the public benefit.
How is the project funded?
We are a 501c3 nonprofit supported by a community of donors.
